Depending on the quality of the cable you use, whether it is full solid copper or CCA copper clad aluminum your results will vary. For long runs over 75ft, we recommend full solid copper wire since it is a better conductor, and CAT6 wire because it is 23 awg cable vs CAT5e which is 24 awg cable. In order for the PTZ Camera to function properly you need to make sure to assemble everything accurately. This is the balun that will be used on the camera side.
The leads should be made bare enough to form a good electrical connection, but not so much that they have a possibility of crosstalk. The leads should be screwed down firmly, and not have bare wire protruding from the end. It's not necessary to attach the terminal, but it does make assembly and disassembly easier at later times. We have not connected the green wire to anything as it is specified as Earth.
Once again make sure your connections are tight on the terminal and will not touch or create crosstalk. Here we have connected the balun to the camera's pigtail. The female DC jack [E] is unused on this end. It doesn't matter which balun you use as long as the connections you see are the same. This step will vary depending on your setup. If you do not have a PTZ Controller skip to the next step. Doing so will give you some wiggle room on moving the controller around. For demonstration purposes we do not use one.
Here we have connected the RS leads from the balun to the controller.Instead of getting a costly dedicated joystick control surface, you can use our software to turn a budget-friendly joystick into a precise professional PTZ Joystick Camera Controller. Control your PTZ Cameras with simultaneous pan, tilt, zoom control as well as variable speed control with the connected joystick, a feature not usually available with many PTZ joystick controller surfaces on the market.
There are also 3 joystick performance modes available that come in handy when broadcasting, live streaming, or recording with your PTZ Cameras. This is very practical during a broadcast because instead of switching the cameras and presets from the program interface, you can do it straight from the joystick and everything is right there at your fingertips.

Joystick Performance Modes There are also 3 joystick performance modes available that come in handy when broadcasting, live streaming, or recording with your PTZ Cameras. X-Joystick Mode — Enables panning on X axis only. This is great for camera shots where you want a smooth, even pan from left to right. Slow mode - Limits top joystick speed by expanding joystick travel between speed level changes.
This is great for when you precision of control and to move the camera at a slower speed range. This mode eliminates any quick speed ups in movement. Soft mode - Gradual joystick speed acceleration so the camera increases the speed of its movement steadily as you move the joystick, for a flying camera effect. So what Joysticks are supported?

By controlling the PTZ movements, an operator can patrol a certain location by sending commands using a controller joysticka DVR Digital Video Recorder or software installed in a computer located in a remote monitoring center. In this example, the cameras are connected to the DVR with a twisted pair cable that sends the commands through a universal connection standard and a protocol that the camera and the DVR have in common such as Pelco P or D. By using the RS standard with twisted pair cables, it is possible to send commands to the camera at distances up to 1,m 3, feet and multiple cameras can be connected to the cables in a serial line.
In the image below, it is possible to see the connector used for the command via RS TX is the transmitter and RX is the receiver. The important thing to keep in mind is that positive and negative wires should be properly connected to the DVR and to the camera.
In addition to the physical connection using the RS standard, it is also necessary to configure the camera ID and the communication protocol that will be used between the devices. This communication protocol is developed by the manufacturer itself, so if the DVR and camera are from the same manufacturer there will be no problems, but if they are from different brands we must use a universal protocol.
There is a universal protocol called Pelco P and another called Pelco Dthey are available in cameras and DVRs from different manufacturers, so if we have different brands of equipment we can use this protocol.
Pelco is a large camera manufacturer that created this communication protocol for PTZ cameras.
How to Connect an Analog PTZ Camera Using Video Power Data Baluns and Ethernet Cable
This standard became popular among system integrators, so other manufacturers besides having their own protocols, also let Pelco's protocol available on their equipment for compatibility. When both devices PTZ and DVR are manufactured by the same company they usually use the same protocol, so there's no need to use Pelco's. On situation, where the devices have different brands, it is necessary to choose the common protocol between them, in this case Pelco P or D for example. A PTZ camera usually has a switch where you can choose the protocol.
This is an example of how a camera's protocol is configured. A small arrow can be rotated to a specific position in which a number or letter represents the protocol.
Using a table from the camera manufacturer's manual you can choose the protocol that will be used, as shown in the illustration below:. In the table you can find the manufacturers and their respective protocols and data such as communication speed Baud Rate. The configuration is very simple, just follow the table orientation and choose the protocol you want to use, in the case of this manufacturer the arrow positioned at number 6 indicates that the camera is configured to use Pelco P protocol with Baud Rate 9, It is also necessary to configure the DVR with the same parameters used in the camera.
In the above example, the parameters have been configured on the camera using a system with a rotating arrow, other cameras may, howeve,r have a set of small switches known as "Dip Switches" that can be placed in the "on and off" positions to obtain the desired setting.
A table for the correct combination of these switches "Dip Switches" can also be found in the camera manufacturer's manual. In the menu above that the DVR has several types of protocols from different manufacturers, that can be different according to each brand. Just apply the concept that you've learned here. It's important to read the device's manual to make sure you are using the right protocol, baud rate and everything else.
